Global Competition Review recognizes firm professionals and affiliated expert for work in $1.2 billion healthcare antitrust class action.
Washington—Twelve Cornerstone Research professionals and an affiliated expert, Gautam Gowrisankaran of Columbia University, are shortlisted by Global Competition Review (GCR) for their work in a $1.2 billion antitrust class action in the healthcare industry.
Cornerstone Research is nominated in the category of Litigation of the Year – Non-Cartel Defense. Professor Gowrisankaran is nominated for Economist of the Year. The 2023 GCR Awards honor the world’s leading antitrust lawyers, economists, enforcers, and academics, as well as the biggest cases from 2022.
Cornerstone Research supported Professor Gowrisankaran in Sidibe et al. v. Sutter Health. In this long-running case, plaintiffs alleged that Sutter Health violated antitrust laws by tying the sale of services across certain inpatient hospitals and imposing contracts that further prevented insurers from steering patients to lower-cost options. The lawsuit, first filed in 2012, claimed this led to artificially inflated premiums for the class of individuals and entities paying premiums for commercial health insurance.
- Economist of the Year – Gautam Gowrisankaran of Columbia University: Professor Gowrisankaran is shortlisted for work on Sidibe v. Sutter Health. He testified before a federal jury and identified evidence and sources of competition overlooked by the plaintiffs’ expert in their analyses of market definition and market power.
- Litigation of the Year – Non-Cartel Defense: Twelve Cornerstone Research professionals are shortlisted for their work on Sidibe v. Sutter Health, supporting Professor Gowrisankaran’s testimony.
The award finalists will be announced at an awards ceremony on March 28, 2023.
